Does any mom love slime? I know I am not a fan. I remember playing with Gak and slime as a kid and it was weird and made your hands smell funny. I also know that slime has been banned from a few of my friend’s houses because of misuse of slime policies. I can certainly understand because if my kids had decided to re-decorate my house like Slimer from Ghostbusters, I wouldn’t let it come through my door again!
We did have an issue with silly putty and had to put the breaks on that for awhile, but so far we haven’t had trouble with the slime. We do make sure to store it up high when certain kiddos come to visit though lol.
My kids just absolutely love making slime. I have told them as long as they make it outside, clean up their mess, and don’t stick it to things in my house I am happy to help them get the ingredients they need to make their gooey gross slime!
The last attempt at making slime was a less than perfect experience but it was still fun! My daughter has been obsessed with her school friend’s glow in the dark fluffy slime since before corona times. Her friend was kind enough to message us the recipe. My daughter didn’t have her own contact solution and she tried substituting borax from her slime kit. Surprise! It didn’t got as planned lol.
Anyway my son was stoked with his weird glowing bouncy alien goo, and my daughter who was so excited to write for the blog was unfortunately disappointed in the results. Once she gets a recipe she is happy with I’m gonna let her make a slime making video and I know she will be super excited!
Right now we are just making little videos like this but we plan to do much more. Keep scrolling down to get the glow goo recipe!
Here is what she had to say about making “slime” this last time:
“It breaks apart and does not stretch, if you poke the slime it breaks.
So while my brother thinks it is wonderful, I call it a fail. – quotes from daughter
She was disappointed and he was impressed, and we decided that the texture was more like flubber and less like slime. I actually liked it better than slime but I don’t think mom approval makes it cooler in my daughter’s eyes lol.
*Note – the “Instructions for making Slime” on the back of the elmer’s glue container do say to use contact solution (with boric acid) as well as baking soda.
This means if you pick up some contact solution and baking soda along with your glow goo ingredients you can make slime or glow glue. It always nice to have options and super fun to see how a change in a few “ingredients” can lead to an entirely different result!
If you are wanting to make slime and you don’t already have contact solution with boric acid and baking soda on hand you may find purchasing the Elmer’s Magic Liquid cheaper.
This Magic Liquid Activator is the borax, the contact lens solution, and baking soda all in one. There are tons of different fun activators such as this one that caught my daughter’s eye because she is not a fan of the smell of slime.
A very easy, and economical, way to make several varieties of slime is to buy a giant bottle (or 2) of plain Elmer’s Glue and purchase the different styles of activators instead of buying fancier glues, expensive slime kits, or additional materials.
I’ll have to make a separate post for all the different activators because there is a bunch from glow-in-the-dark, to metallic, to crunchy but the post is already long enough.
How to make Krafting Kids Glow Goo
Do this activity under adult supervision and don’t forget your safety gear! You will need a measuring cup, and we use plastic spoons and paper bowels so we aren’t putting non-food items in the dishes we eat off of.
Ingredients
- Borax
- Elmer’s Glow in the Dark Glue 5oz
- Barbasol Shaving Cream
This is a lot of borax and will make a ton of slime & can also be used to remove stains from clothes. *Please note – Safety Information – Eye irritant. May be harmful if swallowed. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not take internally. Keep out of reach of children. Not for drug use. Ingredients: Sodium Tetraborate (a natural mineral).
Elmer’s Glow in the Dark Glue 5oz each should make 4 handfuls of glow goo. 1 bottle of glue per kid is what we figure but if you have smaller kids you could probably get away with splitting that amount of glow goo in half.
This 10 oz can of babasol should last several times of making goo or fluffy slime depending on how much your kids use. We have not tried another shave cream besides Barbasol yet but we are going to try a generic Walmart brand and we will let you know if it works or not.
Instructions
- Make borax solution by mixing 1 teaspoon of borax with 1 cup of warm water.
- Pour 1 bottle of Glow in the dark Elmer’s glitter glue into the borax solution.
- Mix with spoon until ingredients start coming together & then mix hands.
- With your hands add about 3 to 4 tablespoons of barbasol shaving cream a little at a time until you get your desired texture.
Now you may have to mess with the ratios a little bit with this because I got the instructions second-hand from my kids! Let me know if you try it and what worked best for you.
Now that I have wrote this post and raved about how cool this bouncy glow glue is my daughter is finally excited about it. I doubt we have stumbled onto something completely new and I am sure there is a common name for our glow goo. If you know of a similar product with a different name leave it in the comments so we can search different “recipes” for it.
We think you will have fun with your glow goo though. It doesn’t stick to itself particularly well but it snaps and pops while you squish it and it bounces! It is a super fun sensory activity and personally I love that the end product is less slimy lol.
Thanks for reading with us today. We hope your families are happy, healthy, and well!
Best Wishes,
Kat
